Viruses are waking up as planet warms

The thawing of permafrost in the Arctic due to climate change is releasing ancient viruses and pathogens, posing a new danger to public health. Virologist Jean-Michel Claverie has spent over a decade studying "giant" viruses found in Siberian permafrost, some of which remain infectious. Concerns are growing that as the Arctic continues to warm, more dormant pathogens could be released, potentially causing disastrous effects.
